Speaking Korean

None of our sprogs can speak Korean. Mari went out of her way only to speak ENglish with Josie in an effort to assimmilate quickly into NZ society. As a result of this Josie is dead set against going to the effort of learning a new language. She said today that she would rather learn ENglish or if she had to learn a new language whe would rather learn animal language so that she could speak to the birds outside. Victoria is still at the age where she is eager to please and tries to listen to Korean if Mari speaks it. So from now on we will embark on the battle of speaking Korean at home. I think it may very well be a battle which is already lost.

I dangled the carrot about going to Korea in the distant future for a holiday to Josie but she said she would much rather go to Australia to get a picture of herself with a Kangaroo.

  • John,

I vaguely remember, from an old Language Acquisition class, that the best solution for raising a bilingual child is for one parent to speak exclusively in one language while the other speaks exclusively in another.

It's too late to try that on Josie, but it might work for the other little sprouts. Then again, you never know... Josie might change her mind and realize that speaking Korean will be more fun than learning to speak Kangaroo, as kangaroos tend to be rather dull conversationalists.
